How to use the 401(k) growth projection calculator
Worked example
401(k) projection: calculation example
Start with $50,000, add $12,000 from the employee and $4,000 from the employer each year, and assume a 0% return. After 20 years, the total is $370,000 before fees or withdrawals: the original $50,000 plus $320,000 in new contributions.
Returns are not guaranteed. This simple projection excludes fees, taxes, inflation, vesting, contribution-limit changes, and withdrawals.
Common question
Understand the result
Does this projection enforce 401(k) contribution limits?
No. It uses the amounts you enter. Check current IRS and plan limits, and consider fees, vesting, inflation, and withdrawals before relying on a projection.
