Method

Formula and inputs

Net sales = gross sales − returns − allowances − discounts.

Use separate returns, allowances, and discount totals for the same period. Do not subtract deductions a second time if the sales figure is already net.

Worked example

Net sales: calculation example

$120,000 gross sales less $4,000 returns, $1,000 allowances, and $3,000 discounts gives $112,000 net sales. Deductions are about 6.7% of gross sales.

Track each deduction separately. A rising deduction rate may point to product quality, fulfillment, pricing, or promotion issues.

Common question

Understand the result

Are net sales the same as net profit?

No. Net sales deduct sales adjustments, but not cost of goods sold, operating expenses, interest, or taxes.
